The vast majority of people with ankle injuries do not have bony fractures, according to research studies. But how do you know when you should get checked for the possibility of a fracture? Below is a set of guidelines called The Ottawa Rules that doctors use to help decide if you need to get an x-ray or not. As Physical Therapists, we are aware of these guidelines as well, and use them to help us decide when you need to see your doctor. Bottom line – you’re hurting pretty good, go get checked out by your doctor or a PT you trust.
